Meanwhile, Mulder is hiding in Scully's bedroom - and not very well! "An Unexpected Visitor" * * * * * I slowly walked up the stairs to my apartment, thinking about how Mulder could have possibly thought that our new case was a simple case of witchcraft. I walked down the hallway slowly, turning the case over and over. Absent-mindedly, I got my keys out of my pocket, and looked ahead of me for a moment, as I saw someone opening my door. His back was turned, fumbling with keys. "Mulder?" The man turned. "Sorry to disappoint you Dana." "Oh, sorry Bill. What are you doing here?" I hugged him, and opened my door and let us in with my own set of keys. "I changed my locks." "Oh. Well, I was in town, so I thought I would surprise you." "Well that was sweet of you. I really appreciate it Bill. Go ahead, make yourself at home, I'm going to get out of this skirt." I put my bag down on the kitchen table, and went into my bedroom, carefully closing the door behind me. I opened my dresser as I heard someone move on the other side of the room. "Who is it?" I pulled my gun out. "It's me." "Mulder? What are you doing here?" I softly demanded. "Is there someone else in the apartment?" "Yes, Bill is here." "You never told me he was coming into town." He sounded betrayed. "Yeah, well, I never knew until I saw him trying to get in here." "I thought I heard something." "Mulder, you still haven't answered my question." "I wanted to talk to you, and-" "So why are you waiting in my bedroom?" He shrugged. I finished getting my jeans and T-shirt out, and went into the bathroom to change. I came out, and he was dozing on the bed. I shook him awake. "Mulder." I sat on the edge of the bed. "Yeah? What?" His hand lazily roamed around on my leg. "Stay in here. I don't want Bill to know that you're here. The last thing I need is for him to flip out on me." "Ok. I'll just take a nap, if you don't mind." "No problem." I smiled, and kissed the side of his face. He smiled back at me, and I felt him watching me leave. I shut the bedroom door behind me, knowing that he would to listen to Bill's and my conversation, trying to pick up his name. I smiled, not aware that I had been standing in the same spot for a few moments. "Dana? You there? Hello? Earth to Dana...." I came back to reality with a jerk. "Oh, sorry. I was thinking about something that happened at work today." "Oh. It sounded like there was someone else in there." "No, just the radio. Have you eaten dinner yet?" "Yeah, I ate a few hours ago." "Oh, ok. You don't mind if I do, then do you?" "No, of course not. So. What's new with you?" "Not much. Just more of the same. Reports, Investigations, an autopsy or two, y'know." "Sounds real.... Umm.... Interesting." I laughed. "Well, actually it is. With Mulder, anything can happen, and it usually does." "Like what?" He sounded suspicious. "Like last week we got stuck in an elevator at about 10pm, and it took four hours for anyone to realize that the elevator wasn't working." I purposely neglected to tell him exactly what happened in that elevator and what happened when they found us. He laughed. "Sounds like real fun. Any interesting cases?" I thought a moment. "No, really, more of the same." "So I take it you don't consider the X-Files interesting anymore? Is that what they're called?" "Yeah...don't get me wrong, I love what I do." I came back into the living room with a salad. "But the unusual just seems to have become usual in my life. I don't expect anything to surprise me anymore." I heard Mulder sneeze in the next room. "There's someone in there Dana." "Bill, it's a radio broadcast. I'll go turn it off." "Somehow I don't believe you. I'm following you." "Just sit. Don't you trust me? Jeez." "I trust you, I just don't trust Mulder." I rolled my eyes. "You said you trust me. Bill, just sit. It's nothing, I promise. You've had a long trip, and you're imagining things. The only way someone could get into my apartment is through the front door, and Mulder was not in my room when I went in there just a few moments ago." I realized my little slip, so I put my salad down, and scurried into my room, closing the door. "You ok?" I whispered. "Mmmm-hummm." He looked at me, eyes dancing. "What?" "You're amazing." His eyes had look. He wanted me. I knew it. He knew it. He knew I knew it. I sighed. "Ok, whatever Spooky. Now shut up." I left, with him smiling at me as I left. "Why are you closing the door like that Dana?" "I'm cat sitting. I really don't want the cat getting into the whole apartment." "Oh." He still looked suspicious. "So anyway," I sat down and picked up my salad. "What's up with you?" "Oh not much.... Same old, same old." I glanced over at the table, hoping that I could get to work on that new case before dawn. I hoped he took the hint. "Do you have...work to do?" "Yeah, just a little. We got a new case today, and I have to do some research." "Oh, I see. Do you want any help? I'm sure you could use it." "It'd probably put you to sleep with nightmares. Don't worry about it. I'm fine on my own." "I'd better be getting back to the hotel, it's getting late. Maybe we could talk tomorrow when you get off work?" "Yeah, sounds good." I put my food down as he stood up to leave. I handed him his jacket, and walked him to the door. I hugged him, and sent him on his way, promising to call him when I got off work. I walked back to the bedroom, hoping Bill wasn't listening outside my door. "Mulder?" He sat up, having heard the door close. "Is he gone?" "Yeah. Listen Mulder, you can't do this." "Do what?" He stood up, and put his arms around my waist. "I mean, you can't just show up at my apartment like this, and sit in my bedroom in the dark. How did you get here before I did?" He kissed my shoulder. "I left before you did. I got my errands done, and came here to wait for you." "Mulder, please don't do that again. You scared me so badly." "Alright, I won't. Next time I'll turn on a light." He grinned, and kissed my forehead. "You know what I mean." He grinned. "Ok, ok." I sighed. "Come on, I'll fix you something to eat." "Okay." He followed me into the living room like an obedient puppy. I tossed the case to him. "Here. Start working on this." "Sculllllyyyyy!" He whined. "Can we not work right now? I mean, I'm interested in this case, but...." "Yeah, I know, I know. You want to leave the office at the office." "Exactly." "Fine then." I finished warming up some leftover spaghetti for him, and brought it into the living room. I sat down next to him, and picked up my abandoned salad. I bit into a sweet, juicy tomato, leaving the juice around my mouth. He laughed, and wiped my mouth clean. I smiled. "Thanks." "Don't worry about it." His eyes danced mischievously. "Mulder, you've got that look in your eyes.... What are you up to?" I asked, suspicious. He feigned innocence. "Me? Up to something? Never!" "Okay, whatever. Mulder, have you ever thought about what you would do if the X-Files were shut down? For good?" "Are we talking pre or post re-assignment?" "Well, I don't know. Post, I guess. I mean, what would you rather do?" I watched as that mischievous look came back, and he grinned. "Well, I don't know. I assume you would go back to teaching at Quantico?" "Yeah, I guess. I can't really imagine life without you calling me at three am, telling me we're booked on the next flight to Hickville, Timbuctu. But, that's probably where I would go. You still haven't answered my question." "Be gentle. Hickville? Timbuctu? Now that's hitting below the belt. " He laughed. "Be fair." I laughed too, and replied "Mulder, that is fair." "Ouch. I'm glad you're a friend, and not a foe." "You keep that in mind too. " I smiled, and took his empty plate to the kitchen sink. I put the remains of my salad in the trash, all the while still talking to him. "Mulder, answer my question! I'm serious. I want an answer. What would you do if, " I walked back into the room, "The X-Files were ever shut down for good?" "Aww Scully, don't make me think such scary things. The X-Files will never be shut down. Not for good, anyway. They never have been, and never will be." He smiled as I slipped into his arms on the couch. "I hope so." I looked up at him, and found him staring into my eyes. The brown and green of his eyes mixed together in perfect harmony. I found myself smiling at him. He drew me close in an embrace, and I had just pushed away when I heard the phone ring. I could tell Fox was surprised by me pushing away like that.... I had never done it before. At least not physically. He could wait to hear what I had to say. I picked up the phone. "Hello?" "Hi Dana." It was mom. I heard her fighting her kitten over the phone cord, and I smiled at the image. "What's up mom?" I settled back into my Foxy's arms, letting him know that there was something I had to say to him. He put his arms around me, and once again drew me close, telling me that he would wait. I leaned my head against his shoulder in thanks. I felt his face in my hair, and I tried to concentrate on whatever mom was saying. Apparently she was telling me that Bill was in town. "...he said he would be by there...Have you seen him?" "Yeah, he was here earlier. He went back to the hotel once he saw the pile of folders sitting on my dining room table. I don't think he realizes that Mulder has made that a permeate fixture." We both laughed, and Fox shot me a questioning glance as he heard his name. I ignored it. I leaned back again, and made myself comfortable. I felt him smile, as he wrapped his arms around me tighter. "Just don't let Fox into his sight while he's here Dana." Her voice suddenly turned serious. "Well, isn't that a permeate rule?" "Dear, I'm sorry you have to hear this, but I'm glad it's me telling you, and not someone else." "What is it mom?" "He thinks you're having an affair." "Oh no. Are you serious?" "I'm afraid so." I started laughing. "I'm sorry mom, I have to go." Fox couldn't stand it anymore. He kept asking me questions about what was going on. "Dana!" "Okay, I love you sweetie. Tell Fox hi for me. I can hear him in the background. He sounds like an impatient child." "Yeah I know. I'm just glad I'm used to it. Love you too." We both hung up. Foxy had trapped me with his arms. "What was that all about?" "Just Bill being in town. Oh, and he thinks we're having an affair." I watched as his eyes widened, and sparkled with interest. "Oh really?" He smiled, looking quite evil. "Tell me what you're thinking." "I was just thinking about how amusing it would be to give him a little surprise.... say, make him believe what he thinks?" "You're awful." "I know." I sighed. "Well, you're right about one thing. It would be pretty fun to watch his face, but.... Let me go and I'll think about it, ok?" "If I have to." He let me go. I got up, and went into the kitchen, and ran some hot water to clean the dirty dishes that were waiting. I felt him come up behind me, and wrap his arms around me waist. "Fox, if you want to do the dishes, just say so." I smiled at him. "I won't mind, honest." "Uh, that's ok. I think I can do without." He grinned. "Go watch some TV then. I'll be done in a few minutes." "I wanna stay with you." He whispered into my ear. "Fox Mulder, are you suggesting something? If so, just spit it out already!" "Fine then." He grabbed me, and watched as I put my arms around his neck. He kissed me, long, and slow, and sweet. I returned the kiss. "Did I ever tell you loved you?" "I already knew. I love you too." I felt his hands roam down over my back. We both smiled, and leaned in for another kiss. I heard the front door open. I closed my eyes, and pushed away his arms. I went out to see who it was. "Oh hi Bill. What's up?" "I forgot to give you the hotel number, just in case." "Oh, ok." Mulder walked in. Bill glared at him, giving him the evil eye. "Hey Bill. Have a nice flight?" I felt Mulder come over to me, and whisper something in my ear. Great. He was starting the show before I was ready. Damn him, the stubborn fool. "Okay Foxy." I might as well go along. I pushed him playfully away. "I'm sorry Bill. Here. Why don't you write down the number while I make him do the dishes? I'll be right back." I handed him some paper and a pen, and shoved Mulder into the kitchen. I was grateful for having moved into a bigger place. The new kitchen was shut off from the rest of the place. I closed the door behind us. Mulder took it as an initiative. He started right where we left off. "No dammit!" I hissed at him, watching his face turn from mischievous to hurt to angry to sad puppy dog like. I sighed. "Fox, not now. Stop it, please, I can guarantee that Bill's listening to us on the other side of the door. You do these dishes, and we'll finish this a little later, ok?" He got that look in his eyes again. "Okay." He kissed my forehead, and moved towards the sink. I left the room, carefully letting Bill know that I was coming through the door. I watched as he casually leaned against the couch. Bill knew me, and he knew that he had been caught. But neither one of us was going to say anything. That's how it always was. "Here it is." He handed it to me. "Call me there when you get off work tomorrow." "Alright. I will. Promise." I smiled at the old phrase. He turned to leave. And turned back around. Here it was, I felt it coming. "Hey Dana? Be careful around Mulder. He has no control. He doesn't know you, and he's hurt you so much already. Don't do anything you'll regret." "Bill," I started, trying to keep cool, "Mulder and I are best friends. We know everything about each other. Neither one of us would hurt the other, if we can prevent it. I know you're concerned for me, but I'm a big girl now. I can take care of myself. It's my life." He nodded, trying to keep the peace. He turned, and left. I watched him walk down the hall, and I shut my door as Mulder came out of the kitchen. I sighed in annoyance. Mulder knew my signals. He came over, and I felt him rubbing my shoulders and neck. I relaxed under his touch, and smiled. He pulled me backward into him. I leaned into his stomach, and his fingers slipped under my shirt to run over my own stomach. I sighed in contentment, and suddenly wanted a bath. I turned around in his arms, and pulled his head down to my own. I kissed him, letting my fingers run through his hair, and I felt him playing with the top button of my jeans. "Mulder, I'm going to take a hot bath, okay?" I was so tired from the week. Our plane didn't leave until tomorrow afternoon. I suspected that Skinner had understood that we needed the extra time. I felt him sigh against my neck. "Alright." "You can join me if you want in a little while." His eyes danced. "Okay." I was rewarded with a grin. I smiled at him, and freed myself from his addicting arms. I went into the bathroom, and ran the hot water, while I slowly undressed, and added some relaxing bubbles. I breathed in their aroma deeply, letting the lavender fill my nose, and I felt the muscles in my back loosen slightly. I climbed in, and leaned back, letting my hair down, letting it cascade over my ears, brushing against my shoulders. I heard the TV go on in the next room, and I smiled, knowing the torture that I was currently putting Fox through. I relaxed, letting Bill's little visit go out of my head. I sighed in comfort, and put some more warm water in. I stretched out very cat-like in my nice new and rather large tub. I looked at the clock. I had been soaking for twenty minutes. I sighed, and decided to put Fox out of his misery. "Foxy!" I called, feeling rather playful, and intriguing. I heard the TV click off. He appeared in the doorway. I motioned him towards me with one finger. He was instantly on his knees. I smiled, feeling evil. I leaned out a bit, and kissed him slowly. I felt his eyes roam to what he could not see through the warm bubbles. I grinned at him, and started to pull his shirt over his head. He took the initiative, and within moments, had climbed in behind me. I leaned back into his arms, and he began kissing my neck, shoulders, and finally turned my head to place a tantalizing soft kiss on my mouth. He was telling me what he wanted, but I wasn't sure I was about to give it to him just yet. "Not now Foxy. Just hold me in your arms for a while." "Dana...." he whined softly, almost was whispering. "But I want you now!" "I know Foxy, I know. Just wait." I kissed him. "I promise you won't regret it." I leaned back again, and felt him sigh against me. I closed my eyes, and let my head roll against his shoulder. The rhythmic breathing was slowly lulling me to sleep. I was so comfortable, so relaxed, without a care in the world. I heard the phone sharply ring next to my head. I snapped my eyes wide open, damning my decision to put that phone in here for these exact occasions, except it was usually Mulder who would be calling me. Or my Foxy. I sighed, and picked it up. "Hello?" I hoped I didn't sound as sleepy as I thought I did. Frohike's voice answered. "I hope I didn't wake you Agent Scully. Having pleasant dreams?" "What is it Frohike? And yes, I was dreaming, but not about you." I felt Foxy kiss me, just below my scar. I was leaning on the edge of the tub. "Ouch. Is Mulder there?" "Yeah, he's right here." I handed the cordless to him. "Frohike wants to talk to you. Don't drop it again Mulder." "I won't." His eyes danced. I leaned back into his arms, and laid my head in its earlier position. Mulder put his arm across my chest, holding me there. "What's up Frohike? A disappearance? Hmm...No, not especially. But no, I'm not willing to leave. Why? Personal business. Keep your own dirty thoughts to yourself. Don't go there." His fingers started massaging my shoulder. I sighed. "We'll be by tomorrow. We haven't had a night off in a long time. Morning. There's a flight with our names on the passenger list that's leaving tomorrow afternoon. No, another X-File. Ok, ok. Goodbye. No, I mean it." He clicked the 'talk' button, and put the phone in its cradle. His other arm circled my waist. "I am so tired." I moaned. "How unfortunate." "Let's go to bed Foxy." "Sounds good." He murmured into my skin. He released me, and I leaned forward to pull the drain, and he got out, and started drying off. I stepped out, brushed off the suds with a towel, and slowly crawled into bed, still wet. I had just closed my eyes, and felt myself drifting off into a deep sleep when I felt my Foxy kissing my eyelids. I opened them, and pulled him into my arms. The sheets were sticking to me, making me very cold. I moved into Mulder's arms, and thought about how nice his warm, dry body felt against mine. His lips moved down to my neck, and shoulders, making his intentions clear. I moaned, just wanting to fall asleep in his arms. I felt him smile wickedly as his fingers roamed south. "Foxy, please..... Just hold me in your arms, and let me wake up with you tomorrow. Please?" I turned my head upward. I could see the desire in his eyes. It was almost too much for him. He sighed after a minute. "Alright. Whatever you say. But tomorrow night's mine." "Okay. Whatever you say." I murmured. I closed my eyes, feeling the warmth of his bare skin against me, and I thought about how nicely we fit together. It was like we were...made for each other. I smiled. "I love you Dana." "I love you too Fox." With that, I fell into a deep, peaceful sleep, thinking how nice it has been with him ever since we became lovers. * * * * * *
