All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry Christmas Day, 1989 Bill Scully, Jr. threw his jacket down on the couch, raking his fingers through his hair. "Alexa, where are you?" he called out. "I'm in the baby's room!" Alexa Scully's voice came from the nursery upstairs. Bill walked up the stairs, heading into the nursery. "Hey, sweetheart," he said, wrapping his arms around his wife's waist and hugging her from behind. "Hey, Billy," Alexa said cheerfully. "How are you?" "I'm good." Bill sighed wearily. "Your day went well?" Alexa asked. "Other than the fact that I had to work, yes," Bill replied. He sniffed Alexa's hair. "God, I love the smell of your hair," he said quietly. Alexa laughed softly. "You are so weird," she informed Bill. "And that's why you love me," Bill retorted. "No, I love you because you're good in bed," Alexa replied, an angelic expression on her face. "Nice to know," Bill said wryly. Alexa could barely contain her joy. They had a two-year-old daughter named Maura. In six months, they would welcome another child into the world. "Is there something on your mind?" Bill asked softly. "Yes, but it can wait," Alexa replied quietly. "No, what is it?" Bill asked, worried that something was wrong. "Are you sick?" Alexa turned to face Bill, shaking her head. "No. I'm not." "Then what is it?" Bill asked again. "You're going to be a father again," Alexa whispered. Bill stiffened. "No," he said. "You can't be saying what I think you are. No." "Yes," Alexa replied, an impish smile on her face. "You are." Bill pushed away, angry. "How could you do this?" he yelled. "How could you do such a damn foolish thing as this. You know we can barely afford everything now! How are our finances going to be with another mouth to take care of? They'll nonexistant,Alexa!" He threw his hands up in the air. "I thought you knew better!" Alexa was stunned. "Bill..." "What?" Bill asked sharply. "I knew you wouldn't be thrilled, but I had no idea you'd be this upset." "You should have known I would." Bill's voice was ice-cold. Alexa reached out, putting a hand on Bill's arm. She flinched as he brushed her hand away. "Bill, please. This should be a time for rejoicing." She looked at him pleadingly. "Well, it isn't," Bill snapped. "You have just brought an incredible financial burden down on me. I hope you're happy." "Bill, please," Alexa said softly. "Don't do this." "I'm not doing anything," Bill said. "You are." "Bill, I wish you would be happy for us." "How can I be when I have to support four people now?" Bill's voice was shaking as he fought for control. "I didn't even want Maura, and I got her!" Alexa slapped Bill. "Don't ever tell me you didn't want our daughter." "Well, I didn't." Bill's voice was cruel. "I didn't even want to marry you. I only did it because you were pregnant with Maura." Alexa stepped back, hurt. "Bill, why are you being so cruel?" she asked softly. "Because I want you to realize what you have done. I didn't even want you. I was plastered when I slept with you after the New Year's Eve party, but I married you when I found out about her. I took responsibility for my actions. I took on a pregnant teen, her three-year-old daughter, and my unborn child. I do not want another child." Bill's voice was unbearably cruel. "I will not take responsibilty for another mistake." "Bill, face it. I am pregnant. In six months, you will have your child in your arms." Alexa took a breath before saying, "And maybe this marriage was the mistake." Bill drew his arm back. He struck out, punching Alexa hard enough to send her staggering backwards. Alexa put a hand to her face, shocked. "You hit me," she said softly. "Damn right." Bill's voice was still cold. "Why did you hit me? You never hit me before." "I am sick and tired of you doing things and thinking that you can get away with them and be forgiven for them when you come to me." Bill started to turn away. "That's it. I'm taking the children and we are leaving." Alexa's voice was shaking as she said, "I thought things would get better. They are not. I am out of here as of as soon as I can get the kids ready to leave." Bill suddenly realized what he had done. "All I can say is I'm sorry," he whispered, sinking to the floor. Alexa looked at Bill, a disgusted expression on her face. "That is not good enough, Bill," she said before walking out of the room. Forty minutes later, Bill heard the slamming of a door. He looked up at the calendar, the color draining from his face as he realized what date it was. "Merry fucking Christmas, Billy Boy," he muttered to himself. THE END
