He had a plane to catch, he didn't need this. Maybe he did. He didn't know what mom had to say, but she was worried. He could tell by the way she was *still* in the kitchen. A blind person could get a glass of water faster. He knew mom. He really knew her. She was in there, probably planning what she would say to him. He was going back, but this time with a little more on his shoulders. He had *just* been told about Dana's cancer. That was bullshit. Not the cancer, but the idea that he was last on the list to know. And what really pissed him off, was the fact that "this guy Mulder" had known before him. "What in hell was she thinking. I'm her brother, her big brother." Maggie Scully exited the kitchen. Her face, well, it was straight. *hell* it was more than straight, it was hiding a little too much. Bill got up as she passed him to get his bags. "Mom, I'll get those..." his voice trailed off. She dropped them. And faced her son. "Why do you have to be like this Bill?" she asked, not pleading, but as annoyed as hell. "Like what?" he asked. "How can you be jelous." she practily whispered now. She sounded upset, though he could not find a reason why. "Of who?" "Mulder!" she shouted. Her eyes were watery. "I've never even met the guy. How can I be jelous..." "Cut the crap. You know exactly what I'm talking about." There was silence. He shifted his weight uncomfertably. "No, I'm afraid I don't." he swallowed. 'Yes, you do.' he thought. 'This is your own mother, you can't lie to her too.' "She trusts Mulder." she said softly "I thought she trusts me. I'm her brother for god's sake." "This isn't one of her high school boyfriends Bill. And, this isn't high school either. You can't protect her anymore..." "So, what your saying is, that Mulder can protect her, but I can't." "No" she said quietly, trying not to set him off. She didn't know how to put this. "Things have changed. A lot has happened. She depends on him now, you haven't been here. And besides, sometimes I think she need's some one outside of the family..." "And outside the church." he questioned. maggie looked down. "That was her descion, and I respect it. She has a lot to deal with, her cancer, her job, I'm not about to force her into anything." "You practicly jumped on her with Father McHugh" he said sitting back down on her couch. "No, I was simply giving her the option." "Bullshit" he yelled, perhaps a little too loud. "You know, Dana is an adult, sometimes I think you forget that. I respect that, as I respect you." He looked up, begging for something to say, the silence was torture. "Are you saying I treat her like a child?" "No" she answered quickly "No, I just think you don't understand her anymore. She has been through a lot. Her and Mulder..." She paused. "Her and Mulder have a differnt kind of relationship. The rely on eachother, more than anything." "I just find that a little hard to stomach. I've never even met the guy, and he's already taken my place." "He didn't take your place Bill. He isn't her brother. She's coming to a point in her life where she can't always rely on family. You *need* to understand." "No, I don't, and I won't." "Your being stuborn, your acting like an 8 year old" "No, I just don't like to sit back and let my sister's life pass before my eyes." "Your not even here most of the time." she whipsered *loudly* "I have-" She stopped him. "I meant" she said firmly "That you can't expect everything to be the same when you come home." "I don't. I just can't accept this." "Well, your just going to *have* to!" she screamed "Didn't you ever think Dana would find some one, or something other than her family? Don't tell me you thought, she would always be here." "No. That's not what I said." he spoke, coldly. "Well, you certainly made her want you around more often Bill." she said sarcasticly. He got up and slid his arms into his coat, and picked up his bags. "I'll call you" he said She backed up and knodded, silently. He looked at her once more, and then walked out the door. ******************************************** How did you like it. Tell me!! Now!
